Linda Opyr



Poet Laureate Nassau County

2011-2013





Linda Opyr, the Poet Laureate of Nassau County 2011–2013, is the author of nine collections of poetry. Her poems have appeared in The Hudson Review, Poetry Ireland Review, Crannóg, The Stony Thursday Book, Antiphon, The Seventh Quarry, Atlanta Review, The Paterson Literary Review, and The New York Times. Numerous other journals, anthologies, and newspapers in Ireland, England, and the United States have published her poems, as well.


The poet holds a Doctor of Arts degree in English and American Literature from St. John's University.


She was a featured poet in the Bailieborough Poetry Festival in Ireland in October of 2017. 


Linda facilitates a monthly workshop at the Elmont Public Library. Workshop dates are listed via the Adult Services link on the library's website.

About Linda



Linda Opyr, the Poet Laureate of Nassau County 2011–2013, is the author of nine collections of poetry. Her poems have appeared in The Hudson Review, Poetry Ireland Review, Crannóg, The Stony Thursday Book, Antiphon, The Seventh Quarry, Atlanta Review, Paterson Literary Review, and The New York Times. Numerous other journals, anthologies, and newspapers in Ireland, England, and the United States have published her poems, as well.

She has been featured in the Bailieborough Poetry Festival in County Cavan the Walking with Whitman Series at the Walt Whitman Birthplace and the Poetry Series at Long Island University, C.W. Post campus. She was the Visiting Poet in the 1999–2000 Writers' Series at Roger Williams University, and also for many years has served at the New England Young Writers’ Conference at Bread Loaf, as a featured poet and keynote speaker. In April of 2001 the Suffolk County Legislature presented her with a Proclamation honoring her poetry.

The poet holds a Doctor of Arts degree in English and American literature from St. John’s University.
